Description:
The Delaware Museum of Nature & Science wished to include key artifacts of its existing collection, while incorporating contemporary scientific research regarding local and global climate issues. This meant a complete re-envisioning of the spaces, thematic elements, wayfinding and visitor engagement. With the leadership of RPDI International Architects and The Design Foundation, the museum team determined its new strategy for the institution's new life.
For the Delaware Museum, The Design Foundation developed two complex and innovative media experiences. The first media project comprises an environmental media space that represents a deep sea submersible journey to the Atlantic Ocean floor, in a ten minute media representation. The second innovative media installation features the evolutionary characteristics of distinct dinosaur species highly adapted to specific environments, on land, in the ocean and in the air. The immersive experience is presented through a large scale media wall that is a centre piece of the Museum’s "Paleozone" featuring actual mounted dinosaur specimens. Visitors can select a particular specimen, featured in the space and the interactive showcases that species – its body morphology, its unique adaptations, bringing the fossil skeleton to life. Highly detailed and scientifically accurate digital models of the dinosaurs and complex animations show how the living species moved and responded to their environments in unique ways. The graphic design of the media is fresh and bold offering dramatic moments, helping visitors to understand the unique characteristics of the living specimens.
For the section of the museum highlighting various environmental zones that occur in the State of Delaware, The Design Foundation was tasked with designing and producing large scale murals that were then used as the backdrop for all of the artefacts on display. Large scale murals were also produced for custom cases throughout the space, highlighting specific animals and their unique environments.
